NEW YORK, NY – EmblemHealth, one of the nation's largest nonprofit health insurers, launched its Community Diabetes Wellness Program at its Neighborhood Care Fordham Road location in the Bronx with a free resource fair. The event featured a sampling of community services offered by EmblemHealth and other community-based organizations. The Community Diabetes Wellness Program provides a comprehensive approach to help keep people with prediabetes from progressing into diabetes and help those with diabetes to manage their chronic condition.
"Today we are launching our Community Diabetes Wellness Program in the Bronx, an area where the need is high and the opportunity to make a difference is great," stated Karen Ignagni, CEO of EmblemHealth. "We are thrilled to partner with the HealthyNYC initiative to bring resources necessary to help stop this silent killer."
"Diabetes is an epidemic in New York that disproportionately impacts Bronx communities," said New York State Senator Gustavo Rivera. "I commend EmblemHealth for launching their Community Diabetes Wellness Program, a necessary investment towards the essential health care resources needed to prevent and manage diabetes that our community deserves."
New York City Council Member Oswald Feliz said, "I applaud EmblemHealth for launching their Community Diabetes Wellness Program in the Bronx. This program will provide comprehensive prediabetes and diabetes management and education to our community members, including those who have been historically underserved and lack access to the resources they need to get and stay healthy."
Attendees at the resource fair received free A1C screenings and access to prediabetes and diabetes management resources from various organizations. While there, they were offered the chance to sign up for courses and other programming, including healthy nutrition workshops, exercise classes, and more.
