Inaugural meeting of City Partnership for Family Caregiving Corps to address financial and cultural impact of family caregiving
New York, NY (February 23, 2015) — The New York City Partnership for Family Caregiving Corps (“NYCP4FC Corps”), created in 2012 by EmblemHealth under its Care for the Family Caregiver Initiative, announced today that it has formed a Corporate Leadership Council to bring positive action and solutions for family caregivers in the corporate workplace. The newly-formed body will hold its first meeting on Wednesday, February 25 at EmblemHealth’s Manhattan headquarters and begin a plan of action that takes into account the vast research acknowledging the huge costs to corporations due to family caregiving-related issues.
Employees who work with corporations for 6, 8, 10, 15 or more hours a day often work as family caregivers 24/7. These individuals need to know that they are not alone, and that there is help available, implementing practical, concrete “best practices” for dealing with family caregiving issues, as represented by each member of the NYCP4FC Corps, offers support for all, including the bottom line. The inaugural NYCP4FC Corps Corporate Leadership Council is made up of some of New York’s most influential corporate leaders. The Council was formed to develop a set of guiding principles to help corporations build a culture that is sensitive to family caregiving issues experienced by their employees. The Council is working to increase the importance of being classified as a Responsible Family Caregiver Friendly Corporation amongst leading members of the business community.
“Research shows that each year large corporations lose anywhere between $17 billion and $38 billion due to unaddressed family caregiving-related issues,” said Gregory Johnson, EmblemHealth Director of Community Outreach and Executive Co-Chair of NYCP4FC Corp. “What this means is that family caregiving not only impacts the wellbeing of employees and their families, but left unaddressed has major adverse effects on a company’s financial bottom line. The Corporate Leadership Council will help to address this by creating guidelines for recognizing, acknowledging, and accepting family caregiving issues in the workplace, and fostering an environment of openness and sensitivity for employees who are caring for a loved one.”
The inaugural meeting of the Council will be held starting at 8am at EmblemHealth’s offices, 55 Water Street, 3rd Floor. The Breakfast’s co-chairs are Donna M. Corrado, PhD., Commissioner of the New York City Department for the Aging, and Arthur Byrd, Chief Financial Officer of EmblemHealth.
