NEW YORK, NY – As part of the EmblemHealth family of companies’ dedication to further career development opportunities for youth interested in healthcare and the NYC Public School’s (NYC DOE) commitment to exposing high school students to the world of work, EmblemHealth partnered with the NYC DOE and the Partnership for New York City for a day of career exploration with students from James Madison High School on March 7.

Tenth-grade students enrolled in the Brooklyn high school’s medical science program visited EmblemHealth’s Corporate Headquarters at 55 Water Street to meet with the organization’s executives, network with employee speakers, and workshop solutions to real-world problems in healthcare ranging from encouraging teenagers to get more involved with their own wellbeing to improving population health.

Students spent the day learning about the EmblemHealth family of companies—including nonprofit health insurer EmblemHealth, primary and specialty care practice AdvantageCare Physicians (ACPNY), and community-based Neighborhood Care—hearing from organization leaders about their career journeys, and attending a virtual tour of ACPNY and Neighborhood Care’s East New York colocation.

“Healthcare is an incredibly rewarding field with a variety of career routes that we champion at the EmblemHealth family of companies,” said Bill Voigt, Chief Human Resources Officer, EmblemHealth family of companies. “We are proud to partner with NYC Public Schools and the Partnership for New York City to share the diversity of our workforce with James Madison High School and inspire young New Yorkers to take part in hands-on activities that address our City’s most pressing issues.”

“Our mission at New York City Public Schools is to make sure that each student graduates on a pathway to a rewarding career and long-term economic security. Initiatives like Career Discovery Week are pointed efforts towards that goal,” said NYC Public Schools Chancellor David C. Banks. “It brings great delight to collaborate with Partnership for New York City in this endeavor. I am confident in the growth that will come from our students after they are immersed in this experience, and are faced with the endless possibilities for their careers.”

The day concluded with 10-minute presentations from student groups, who worked together to address current problems in healthcare. Students presented insightful solutions to topics on men’s health, peer pressure, substance abuse prevention, and homecare services to company executives and leaders.

The day’s speakers exemplified the family of companies’ variety in healthcare leadership and included:

  • Karen Ignagni, Chief Executive Officer, EmblemHealth family of companies
  • Bill Voigt, Chief Human Resources Officer, EmblemHealth family of companies
  • Tim Kelly, Chief Strategy Officer, ACPNY
  • Nazneen Rahman, AVP, EmblemHealth Neighborhood Care
  • Karlin Larkin, Diversity Strategy Leader, EmblemHealth
  • Adina Jones, Director, Nursing Specialty Services, ACPNY
  • Olivia Pryce, Community Affairs Manager, EmblemHealth and ACPNY
  • Terri Rhymes-Lowery, Regional Manager, EmblemHealth Neighborhood Care

Career Discovery Week took place from March 6 through 10, during which more than 2,500 high school sophomores from approximately 70 public schools received immersive, up-close exposure to potential professions through interactive day-long visits at some of the city’s leading employers.

EmblemHealth was selected as a leading employer to participate in the NYC Public Schools Student Pathways initiative, an expansion of career-connected learning that provides work-based learning opportunities and career exposure to high school students from all five boroughs.

On April 29, EmblemHealth will team up with James Madison High School again for their Wellness Fair to continue bringing healthcare resources to students.
